might be trying to present themselves as better than the others (though why the hell they colored their van that way is anyone's guess).

The Gang consists of a bunch of teenagers dressed in more conservative, old-fashioned clothing, even though this is the late 1960s, when many youth were sporting colorful tie-dyes in rebellion against the old order. Maybe Shaggy is deranged along those lines, either because of a psychosis or being fed a whole lotta drugs by the gang in the psychedelic tour bus.
Fred from scooby doo serial#
As The Venture Bros pointed out, this is similar to the real-life serial killer known as "The Son of Sam", who claimed that canine demons ordered him to carry out his brutal murders. Everyone's heard the joke that he can understand Scooby's dog-speak because he's always blasted on drugs, but there may be something more sinister to it. Shaggy can talk to a dog that certainly shares his personality. And isn't that what being in a cult is all about for plenty of people? She's also put to good use since her braininess means she could have a wide knowledge of legendary monsters and can solve mysteries (more on this later). It seems obvious as to why someone as smart as her would want to follow Fred and Daphne around on wild ghost chases: it'd mean hanging with a pair of attractive teens, thus making her feel accepted. Velma is a bookish type who does't fall into the societal standards of beauty, which could mean that she's not very popular with other teens. She's clearly his clueless, hot groupie, mindlessly following the gang and only serving as Fred's girl. Whenever Fred comes up with a plan, chances are he pairs Velma with Scooby and Shaggy while he ‘goes investigating’ with Daphne. Also noteworthy is that he seems to enjoy pursuing ghost stories.ĭaphne never does much in terms of helping solve the mystery (I'm going off the original cartoon from the late 1960s). Experience from the stories of his parents adventures?įirst, let's look at ‘the Gang’ (interesting word choice, guys!) and the individual members' roles:įred is a handsome and charismatic leader type, all qualities that make him a fit icon and head for a cult.

He even gets the wrong guy the first time around. He quickly concludes that their masked villain is probably somebody they've already met.
Fred from scooby doo movie#
The book and movie rights alone could take care of that. It's not unreasonable that Fred & Daphne are rich after all their escapades. So his personality could be the result of spending a lot of time with Uncle Shaggy.
Fred from scooby doo plus#
(Yes, I know that's an homage to Stan Lee not relevant to the theory.) The name Fred plus the red haired mother is probably what sparked it.įred is obsessed with monsters, which is completely reasonable from a child of members of Mystery, Inc.įred's father is established as being away almost all the time. This thought popped in my head upon seeing the family portrait in Fred's mansion. So, if there's something in there that would invalidate this idea - oh well. Also, while I watched the Scooby-Doo cartoons like everybody else, I'm not familiar with the intricate details of that universe. Obviously, this is for the film version I've never read the comics. Or my preferred choice, option two: Fred knows Shaggy is not fit to drive (because just look at him) and is always quick to insist on driving so that Shaggy doesn't, because Shaggy would either get pulled over or get them all killed.

Option one: Shaggy lost his license, most likely for driving under the influence of drugs (because just look at him), so Fred took the role of driver. Looking at the gang, it's pretty clear if that van should belong to anyone it should be Shaggy, the hippy of the group.īut if the van belonged to Shaggy, why would Fred be so insistent on driving it? I posit two possible explanations for this. The Mystery Machine is the most hippy vehicle they could possibly have, Fred on the other hand is basically a straight-laced fancy-boy caricature. However, take a look at that van, and take a look at Fred. But as is pretty often made clear in the shows, Fred is often the one driving it, many assuming he is the owner, and I believe he has referred to it as ‘his van’ on occasion. So the Mystery Machine, for the uninitiated, is the van that the Scooby-Doo crew, or Mystery Inc, are always driving around in.
